Aircel strengthens its support towards tiger conservation in Dudhwa
Donates critical equipment like bicycles and jackets to the UP Forest Department
Lucknow/Dudhwa, November 21, 2014: Building on its commitment to the cause of tiger conservation in India, Aircel in association with Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), today donated critical equipment to the front line staff of the UP Forest Department. Most of the time the forest staff has to travel kilometers on foot, the equipment like bicycles and jackets, will assist the staff during their day and night time patrolling of the park to ensure the safety of the tigers and other wildlife within.
Brinda Malhotra, Head - Corporate Social Responsibility, Aircel, said, "Aircel has been dedicated towards the cause of tiger conservation for the past six years through its 'Save Our Tigers' initiative, to create awareness and garner mass support for the cause. The forest staff patrols in very difficult circumstances inadequately equipped with essentials and risking their lives. With our partner, Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), we are committed to providing resource support to the front line staff of the UP Forest Department."
She added, "We have been working diligently towards U.P. Big Cat Conservation Project. This is a single project in India which aims to address the human animal conflict in a comprehensive manner in the state of Uttar Pradesh, thereby mitigating the negative impact of human –animal conflict and creating a societal impact amongst the communities residing in and around the buffer zones."
The Dhudhwa Tiger Reserve, with approximately 115 tigers (as per census 2010), falls in the Terai region in north India, and due to high human population and habitat fragmentation is prone to serious Human-Animal conflict. Therefore, with some intense efforts and measures like creating awareness across local people to enable peaceful conflict-resolution, creating sustainable models of conflict mitigations in the state, creating a more sensitized younger generation in the state, and support Forest Department initiative towards vaccination of domestic Bovids to prevent disease outbreaks etc; the project implementation will confer greatly to the long term Tiger conservation goal.
"Equipping frontline forest staff to effectively patrol the park is critical for the survival of tigers and its prey species in the landscape. WTI, with support from organizations like Aircel, is involved in capacity building and training of the frontline forest staff for better management of many national parks, including Dudhwa," said Dr NVK Ashraf, Director and Chief Veterinarian, WTI.
Aircel has been working in partnership with Wildlife Trust of India to execute projects that aim to mitigate human-animal conflict by developing Primary Response teams, deploying Rapid Response Teams, revamping anti- poaching camps and training of foresters. Aircel has supported interventions like Snare-free forests for Tigers, Re-Fabrication of Rapid Response Units and Equipping forest staff with anti –poaching kits .These projects have been implemented across various tiger reserves and sanctuaries in India i.e. Dhudwa, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
